Introduction
Along with the 40th Anniversary of Universitas Terbuka, The Faculty of Science and Technology will hold the 4th International Seminar of Sciences and Technology (ISST) 2024. ISST is supported by several journals such as Jurnal Matematika, Sains, dan Teknologi; Food Scientia: Journal of Food Science and Technology; AgriDev: Journal of Agribusiness Digitalization & Community Development; Reksabumi: Journal of Urban, Regional, and Environmental Planning; and Manilkara: Journal of Bioscience, and articles will be published at IOP Proceeding and Proceeding of International Seminar of Science and Technology (ISST). The theme of the 4th ISST 2024 is:
“Innovations in Science and Technology to Realize Sustainable Development Goals”
Faculty of Science and Technology Universitas Terbuka wants to raise this theme because innovation in science and technology plays a critical role in accelerating progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Innovation can drive progress towards the SDGs. By fostering a culture of innovation, investing in research and development, and promoting collaboration between various stakeholders, we can harness the power of science and technology to accelerate progress towards achieving the SDGs and building a more sustainable and inclusive future.
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) serve as a blueprint for a better and more sustainable future for all. Their significance to human life is profound, as they address various interconnected challenges facing humanity, including poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace, and justice. By providing access to education, healthcare, clean water, and sustainable livelihoods, they uplift the standard of living for billions of people worldwide, ensuring basic human dignity and security. SDGs prioritize universal health coverage, aiming to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages. By ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education for all, SDGs empower people with the knowledge and skills needed to escape poverty, participate fully in society, and contribute to sustainable development. SDGs advocate for gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls. SDGs promote sustainable water management and sanitation practices, ensuring access to safe and affordable drinking water and adequate sanitation for all. Sustainable energy sources are crucial for powering economic growth, reducing inequality, and combating climate change. SDGs promote access to affordable, reliable, and clean energy, fostering innovation and economic opportunities while minimizing environmental impacts. SDGs aim to build inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities and communities. SDGs call for urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts, including through mitigation and adaptation measures that promote sustainable development and resilience to environmental challenges. SDGs emphasize the importance of peaceful and inclusive societies, access to justice for all, and effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions at all levels. By promoting the rule of law, human rights, and good governance, they lay the foundation for sustainable development and peaceful coexistence.
Achieving the SDGs requires collective action and partnership at the global, regional, national, and local levels. By fostering collaboration between governments, civil society, the private sector, and other stakeholders, SDGs harness the collective effort needed to address complex challenges and achieve sustainable development for all.
In essence, the SDGs are not just a framework for development; they represent a universal commitment to building a more prosperous, equitable, and sustainable world where every individual can fulfill their potential and live a life of dignity and opportunity.
