Introduction

Accelerating Sustainable Innovation towards Society 5.0”

  • In conjunction with the 38thAnniversary of Universitas Terbuka, the Faculty of Science and Technology will hold the 2nd International Seminar on Sciences and Technology (ISST) 2022. The ISST is supported by several institutions such as Jurnal Matematika Sains dan Teknologi, Food Scieantia : Journal of Food Science and Technology, Agridev Journal, Reksabumi: Journal of Urban, Regional, and Environmental Planning, and Manilkara: Journal of Bioscience.

The theme of the 2nd ISST International Seminar on Science and Technology 2022 is

Accelerating Sustainable Innovation towards Society 5.0

Science and technology is the most important achievement of human beings to solve their biggest challenges. All our efforts to solve our problems are based on science and technology. We deal with environmental destruction, population exploitation, natural disasters, as well as an epidemy with science and technology. The most important thing about the utilization of science and technology is how it benefits to human. On the other hand, the application of technology without considering its benefit may result in a disaster.

The industrial revolution that began on the 18th century (Industrial Revolution 1.0), is a phenomenon that occurs in line with the way human process natural resources and produce goods to meet the needs of life and improve the quality of human life. Along with these changes that occur from time to time, the industrial revolution also continues to develop. The development of the industrial revolution was marked by massive changes in production technology (Industrial Revolution 2.0), computers automation and robotics (Industrial Revolution 3.0), and the massive utilization of internet of things and connectivity (Industrial Revolution 4.0).

The Industrial Revolution 4.0 takes advantage of information technology. The spearhead of the revolution is the rise of big data and artificial intelligence implementation. The development of industry and information technology also has an impact on the acceleration of the spread of information throughout the world. The availability of big data can be used as a source of information. Technology is the spearhead of the development of revolution and the bases in various spaces of human life by relying on big data and artificial intelligence. This technology base generally focuses more on the time, cost, resource, and community efficiency factors that are connected in technology and information networks.

Despite the advancement of technology, there are still challenges that humanities still have to overcome. For example, the exploitation of the environment to fulfill human needs and improve the quality of life. Furthermore, tthe increase of human population also increases the need to improve the quality of life.

Population growth is the biggest cause of environmental damages. The latest population growth rates in the world (1.05% per year) and Indonesia (2.32% per year) are 3.51% of the total world population and in other developing countries. Moreover, with the unequal distribution of population which are all major concerns of world lives today.

Human needs and the increasing human population the global food needs, thus it also increase the needs for agricultural land and plantations. This issue leads to the significant conversion of agricultural land into housing and public facilities that reduce agricultural areas. This has led to excessive exploitation of natural resources and intensification efforts by using increasingly advanced technology. Industries are blooming and energy needs are also increasing, most of which cannot be renewed. In 2014, global consumption of renewable energy was a quarter of total energy consumption. As we know, energy use is also a source of pollution. As all together has an impact on reducing the quality of the environment.

Another impact of the decline in agricultural land in rural areas causes urbanization is a solution for earnings and income and a better life. The high urban population, if not properly arranged, eventually results in chaos, congestion, and discomfort. Residential areas in the city become slums and less organized with poor sanitation and public health.

In order to overcome those problems that recent technologies are still struggling to overcome, we need a newer paradigm that is more human-centred. The thought that life is only based on technology is not considered optimal in terms of efficiency and service quality of human life how to utilize and control technology in building quality human life in harmony with nature, the environment, and society. This concept has been conceived in  Japan, where the government and the academicians want to create a society that can better appreciate and enjoy its life, known as Society 5.0. In this concept, the community controls technology in their lives. Artificial intelligence and big data in the Industrial Revolution 4.0 are transformed into new wisdom to open up more meaningful humanitarian services opportunities. The Society 5.0 concept is a refinement of the previous concepts. Whereas we know, Society 1.0 is when humans are still in the era of hunting and recognizing writing; Society 2.0 is an agricultural era where humans are familiar with farming, Society 3.0: has entered the industrial era, namely when humans have started using machines to help with daily activities -days, Society 4.0: humans are familiar with computers to the internet and Society 5.0 an era where all technology is part of humans themselves, the internet is not only used to share information but to live life.

In the 5.0 era, industrial activities took the form of a virtual world, in the form of human, machine, and data connectivity, all of which were already everywhere, known as the Internet of Things (IoT). Industry 5.0 has introduced flexible mass production technology; machines will operate independently or in coordination with humans and control the production process by synchronizing time by carrying out unification and adjustment of production. One of the unique characteristics of Industry 5.0 is the application of artificial intelligence (AI).

The presence of the industrial revolution 5.0 provides its challenges in all areas of life. For example, in regional planning, a planner must be able to adapt to the 5.0 industrial revolution, namely collaborating between effective planning and the sustainability of people’s lives. In the spatial planning activities, the community must involve the community and assist the community in using technology and, in another case, solving environmental problems always associated with data processing (searching, managing, analyzing, interpreting and presenting). The data that is needed to solve environmental problems appropriately and efficiently.

Science and technology should help to improve the quality of human life without damaging the environment and social structure. The presence of Industry 5.0 can create a balance between advances in digital technology and parallel economic progress with solving social problems. Industry 5.0 is synonymous with human civilization and digital technology synergy without losing the real human identity. A science and technology development approach is needed to accelerate development in the era of industry 5.0. Efforts to use science and technology to support the acceleration of era 5.0 will be discussed further at this conference.
